About Global Health Nursing at St. Luke's International University

We provide education for undergraduate and graduate students. Our master's program includes a master's thesis course and an advanced practice course in global health nursing, which opened in April 2015. The doctoral program offers a researcher program to train researchers and a DNP program to train advanced practice leaders. We aim to develop leaders in global health who can work internationally through these courses.

School of Nursing Education

In the first year, students take the Introduction to Global Health Nursing (required) course to learn about the theory and practice of global health nursing. In the fourth year, students take an optional Nursing Seminar, Comprehensive Practicum, and Comprehensive Nursing (graduation research). In the Nursing Seminar, students deepen their understanding of health care for people of different cultures, religions, and languages by focusing on the health issues of foreign residents in Japan. In the Nursing Seminar on Systematic Review, students learn systematic review methods, write their graduation research in English using systematic review methods on global health issues, and present their graduation research in English. Some graduates have presented their graduation research at international conferences and in peer-reviewed journals.

In the Global Health Nursing Practicum, students practice nursing in slum areas in Manila and in poor areas in Kathmandu, using English and the local language (Tagalog), in collaboration with the Tuberculosis Research Institute and WHO Western Pacific Office. During the summer vacation, there is also a three-week comprehensive training course which includes lectures and hospital training at the University of Illinois in the United States.

In this way, after learning the theoretical and practical fundamentals, the program provides rigorous training in global health nursing through seminars, practical training, and graduation research. As a result, we have produced graduates who are working in East Timor, Zambia, Nepal, Paraguay, England, Australia, and other countries.

Graduate School of Nursing Education

In support of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Graduate School of Nursing is committed to preparing global health professionals who can engage in practical activities and research that contribute to the maintenance and improvement of the health of people around the world, including people in low- and middle-income countries and foreign residents. We actively mentor foreign students, and students in the Global Health Nursing Laboratory can study with students from diverse cultures and religions. Students work on their research projects related to global health, with guidance from faculty members and experts in various fields. Research findings are published in English at international conferences and in international journals.

Master of Science in Nursing:

After learning the fundamentals of nursing, students aim to deepen their expertise in global health nursing and develop their research skills.

Master's advanced clinical practice tracks:

Compared to the Nursing Science programs, the Master's Advanced clinical practice track has a longer seminar period, and students complete internships abroad or work as interns or volunteers with international organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and government agencies in Japan and overseas to develop their practical skills. In the past, we have conducted fieldwork in Indonesia for six months. Moreover, some graduate students have conducted field research in Indonesia for six months, interned at WHO in Geneva, Switzerland, or volunteered at UNFPA in Thailand for one year.

PhD Programs:

This course trains students to become nurse researchers by working on research projects in global health nursing and developing advanced research skills.

DNP Programs:

This course aims to develop nursing leaders who can provide advanced evidence-based practice on issues related to international nursing.
